ABOUT 108 Peace

History

The 108 Peace Institute was founded in December 2023 by Dr. Lobsang Sangay, former Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), and is registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the United States. The Institute was conceived under the guiding influence of the number 108, deeply significant across various cultures, symbolizing the interconnectedness of the universe and human experience, embodying the principles of peace and balance.

Our Vision

At the 108 Peace Institute, we envision a world where peace, freedom, stability, and sustainability are not mere ideals but the lived reality of every individual and the global community.

Our Mission

The 108 Peace Institute is committed to tackling the most urgent challenges of our time. With a measured  and collaborative approach, we champion freedom, democracy, climate action, and able leadership—drawing inspiration from the life and legacy of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama.

Focus Frameworks

The 108 Peace Institute aims to address critical global issues through four focus frameworks: freedom, democracy, climate action, and leadership. Inspired by the life and legacy of His Holiness the Great 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, we seek to promote actionable insights, advocating for a peaceful world. By employing a mandala strategy that aligns vertical and horizontal approaches to program implementation, we aspire to see significant shifts within our focus frameworks.

In the next phases of the website launch, we will introduce more pages that allow us to dive deep into the 108 Peace Institute’s Focus Frameworks: Freedom, Democracy, Climate Action, and Leadership.

Freedom

At the core of our initiatives is the Freedom Project which is a testament to our commitment to religious freedom and individual rights. This project will serve as a clarion call for global stability, advocating for the inherent right of religious communities to determine their paths without interference. This project aims to promote religious freedom and protect the  reincarnation tradition, a revered tradition of Buddhism, and underscores the universal principles of religious freedom and self-determination.

Democracy

Drawing on the Founding President Dr. Lobsang Sangay’s doctoral dissertation on democracy in exile and his decade-long experience leading a democracy in exile, the 108 Peace Institute is uniquely positioned to shed light on democracy’s potential in non-traditional settings and as a natural response to authoritarianism. The 108 Democracy Project aims to provide comprehensive insights and practical tools that illuminate pathways for fostering democracy, particularly among displaced and exiled populations.

Climate Action

The 108 Peace Institute prioritizes the ecological challenges faced by Tibet, also known as the “Earth’s Third Pole,” “Roof of the World,” and “Asia’s Water Tower.” Tibet’s unique environmental situation provides critical insights into the broader implications of climate change for fragile ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. The 108 Climate Action Project aims to catalyze a more informed and urgent response to the climate crisis, highlighting the need for global cooperation and sustainable cultural practices to impact climate justice.

Leadership

A new generation of millennials is on the threshold of assuming leadership in the age of deep polarization and misinformation. Recognizing this, the 108 Peace Institute champions a model of charismatic leadership, which integrates compassion and courage. Furthermore, drawing on Dr Lobsang Sangay’s decade-long leadership experience, the 108 Leadership Project aims to bring a compassion-based leadership and values-based governance model to bear on the youth and the global community.
